 You can try banning gimmes, but just understand that some guys will always beg for them. Last year one reasonably mature human being who occasionally writes for this magazine rode 75 miles through England and sat through most of dinner without saying a word because he had not been conceded a three-foot putt on the final hole at Formby Golf Club. He assumed that (a) because his team had already lost three ways and (b) because the putt was only to tie a press, it would be given. He was mistaken, having underestimated the killer instinct of his "friends." For weeks afterward he would still say to perfect strangers, "Let''s say you''re on the 18th hole of a match, you''re 3 down and ..." Youthful vehicular infatuation never fades; a driver''s license is the one adult perquisite that turns out not to be even mildly disappointing. I''m a snob about walking on my home course, but at resort courses, when carts are required, I dibs the driver''s seat.Perversely, courses that require carts are often poorly laid out for driving. Cartpaths are situated in places where golf balls rarely go, such as on the left. If you are required to keep your cart on the path, you can end up walking farther than you would have if you hoofed it. I once watched a golfer walk 75 yards from the path to examine his ball, which was lying in the rough 300 yards from the green; walk 75 yards back to his cart to get a club; walk 75 yards back to his ball; top the ball 50 yards forward; walk 75 yards back to get another club (his 250-yard club, I guess); drive his cart 50 yards forward, etc. I don''t know anything else nonexplosive, that you can pick up with one hand, and that can move five tons one hundred feet--with safety, precision, and astonishingly little work. Like many good tools the Tirfor is a thing of beauty, superbly designed and engineered. With 100 feet of cable (or more) its reach is much greater than a come-along, and this can often make all the difference. Its speed is much faster, too, not just the speed in moving something (the lever is double-acting) but speed in setting up or moving the set-up around. Often when you need to move something, minutes if not seconds count. The action is precise. A come-along winds the cable upon itself, and often when the cable comes under tension the cable wrap slips a bit. The resulting jerks can cause all kinds of problems in a situation where precise movement counts, and a sudden shift in load may cause failure somewhere else. Finally, the Tirfor has a much more effective (and safer) mechanism for smoothly lowering a heavy load. Most (ratcheted) come-alongs are very poor at this. You need a woodburing stove.
